Cat Information


The cat (Felis catus) is a domesticated member of the Felidae family. It is also the smallest member of this family. Domestication occurred in Egypt about 4,000 years ago. Cats are great pets and can learn a variety of commands. These animals have powerful jaws, sharp teeth and retractable claws. They also have a long tail, used for balance. Cats posses acute hearing and excellent eyesight. Adult cats are about 8 to 10 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 5 and 16 pounds. Some cats can weigh even more than 20 pounds. There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds.
